Hello! I’m Katina and I teach people how to sing.
I’ve been teaching singing technique for over 20 years and have developed a fun, supportive and robust approach that draws on my own bel canto training and my multi disciplinary performing background.
People of all ages love to sing but we sometimes develop habits that make it uncomfortable or even painful to achieve what we think we want to sound like.
I help students understand how the body is an instrument that we “build” in the lessons over time. With effective practise of specific vocal and physical exercises we can replace bad habits with an approach that enables the voice to be free and natural. We can sing with integrity.
A lot of our discomfort comes from our psychological approach to our own voices or attitude to the music we’re learning. A proper vocal technique will stand any singer in good stead whatever the circumstances.
A bit about me
I live in North London and teach privately in Winchmore Hill, Stoke Newington and Hampstead.
I took a Music degree at The University of York going on to study for a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance at Trinity College of Music where I was awarded the Beatrice Taylor Scholarship.
I went on to work as singer with various theatre companies including DV8 Physical Theatre, Almeida Opera, ENO Baylis as well as many contemporary dance companies.
As a singer songwriter I released my own EP, Shine, arranging and producing as well as performing on the record.
I have worked as a singer with hip hop crews, composed TV documentary music, sung on Hollywood film soundtracks and put on recitals of early 20th Century art song. Mavrika was the band I formed with guitarist/producer Chris Morphitis and our eponymous album is available on Spotify etc. Our contemporary reworking of 1930s Rembetika from Asia Minor was critically acclaimed and took us to Womad and gigs at top London venues such as the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
My range of experience is broad and it’s always coming in useful with my teaching practice.
My teaching practice
I teach adults privately, one to one, or as a small bespoke weekly group.
I also teach children from 8 years old upwards.
I have a lot of experience with teenagers who are preparing for GCSE or A Level Music exams as I’ve taught at some of the best state and independent schools in London including St Marylebone School for Girls and Mossbourne Community Academy and The Lyceum Preparatory School.
I run vocal workshops for graduate students training to be Music teachers at The Institute of Education (University of London) as well as CPD courses for teachers at their place of work.
Lots of my students are wonderful singers who have always sung in choirs and need to learn how not to push their voices. They benefit greatly from the small group lessons which allow everyone to develop in a warm, supportive environment.
